Total Produce has bought up exotic fruit specialist Utopia UK, which fell into administration last month.

Total snapped up the company last week for an undisclosed sum, renaming it Total Exotics. Pineapples, mangoes and passion fruit are among the 60 products imported by Utopia, which supplies a range of UK supermarkets.

The company had struggled to deal with an expansion into the prepared fruit market and would now focus on its core business of importing exotic and tropical produce, said Total's executive chairman Denis Punter. "The financial stability and support that Total Produce will bring to the business will create an environment that will enable it to flourish," he said.

Total Exotics will contribute sales of about £25m to its new parent, which turned over £2.3bn last year. The existing management team will continue to lead the new division.
