The Red Tractor's future is a step closer to being secured after the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board voted in favour of using levy payers' money to support it.

The logo came under threat in September last year when AHDB issued a consultation on the merits of a single assurance scheme. One possibility mooted was the creation of a new scheme. If consultees had favoured this approach, it would have led to the tractor becoming obsolete due to lack of funding from AHDB.

Before any levy monies can be given towards the logo, the board must first gain State Aids approval from Brussels.

If this was granted, it was highly likely that the red meat Bpex and Eblex Quality Standard Marks would be replaced by either the tractor in its current form, or a variation incorporating some of the QSM elements, said AHDB.
