The Co-operative Group has embarked on another round of store closures, affecting 145 jobs.

Six stores will shut next month, including a store still trading as a Somerfield, due to “poor trading performance”.

The affected stores are in Welshpool and Newtown, in Powys, Connah’s Quay and Flint in Flintshire, Boston in Lincolnshire and Shildon in County Durham.

“Staff at the stores have been informed of the decision, which has been taken with the greatest regret,” a Co-op Group spokeswoman said.

The move follows two rounds of closures last year. The society shut six stores last September and a further 11 two months later, also due to “poor trading performance”.
