MLC claims the sales value of beef has been shooting ahead of that of turkey over recent Christmases have been blasted by the British turkey industry.
The British Turkey Information Service points to turkey meat dominating the festive meat market last year with a 27.8% volume share compared to beef's 24.2% [TN Sofres Superpanel, four weeks to January 6].
Paul Sheppard, chairman of the British Turkey Sector Group's marketing committee, said: "Turkey meat is much better value. Fresh whole turkeys are currently retailing at approximately £2.98/kg compared to the cheapest beef joint at £4.97/kg.
"Britain shows its preference for turkey by consuming an extra 3,500 tonnes of it more than beef over the festive four weeks."
