EU member states have voted to overhaul strict rules on the size and shape of fruit and vegetables.

Specific marketing standards for 26 types of fruits and vegetables will be repealed, allowing supermarkets to sell 'imperfect' produce.

Although rules will still apply to 10 types, member states will be permitted to exempt them if they are clearly labelled.

"This marks a new dawn for the curvy cucumber and the knobbly carrot," said Mariann Fischer Boel, commissioner for agriculture and rural development.
