Sara Lee decided to steer clear of turkey producer Bernard Matthews because it didn't have the stomach for a protracted battle with the chairman and his family for control of the business, said a source close to the consumer goods giant. "It is possible they could have swung it, but it would have been prolonged and probably nasty," he said. "They took one look at the offer document [stating Matthews' root and branch objections to an offer from any third party] and realised that interfering with that would not be wise. "The responsible thing was then to make this clear to all parties." Shares in the Norfolk firm plunged 10% to 183p following the announcement. {{NEWS }}
