Five UK brewers have adopted lighter glass bottles in a bid to become more environmentally friendly.

The combined efforts of SABMiller, Wells and Young's, Marston's, Frederic Robinson and Scottish & Newcastle will significantly reduce carbon emissions, according to packaging reduction body Wrap.

"The efforts of these brewers is the equivalent of taking 800 cars off the road," said Andy Dawe, Wrap's head of retail programmes.

The new bottles are being used for brands including Strongbow, Marston's, Cobra and Black Sheep Brewery ales. The move has come in response to consumer demand, said Dawe.

"It is encouraging to see so many ale, lager and cider brands redesigning their bottles in line with consumer expectations," he said.

Last year Adnams and Coors announced new lighter bottles as part of the Wrap initiative. Wine producers have also been keen to act, with Constellation Europe and PLB adopting lighter bottles last year.
