A New Zealand dessert wine is making its UK debut following new EU legislation that allows wine with a potential 15% abv and above to be imported.

Sweet Agnes Riesling 2008 from Seifried, now in Waitrose (rsp £14.99), is made using 100% Riesling grapes frozen at the height of ripeness and pressed to create the intense sweet flavour associated with dessert wine. It is 10% abv "with the potential of 15% if fermented further".

Residual sugar in dessert wine means that, unlike regular wine, it can be further fermented.
