The strong pound is set to improve availability of good value South African and Australian wines in the UK in 2014, predict experts.

Increased production in both territories and the strength of the pound against the South African rand and Australian dollar would have a “material impact”, said Justin Knock, MW and consultant at bottler Cobevco.

He added that strong harvests in Australia, Argentina and California would boost availability of quality New World wine and offset a decline in some European wines.

Last year’s poor harvests in France would bring a shortage of good-quality wines, he said, adding that supply of Mâcon and Chablis was set to tighten.
