The drinks industry enjoyed value and volume growth at Christmas - in spite of sustained discounting by retailers in the two months to the end of December.

ACNielsen figures exclusive to The Grocer show total beers, wines and spirits rose 1.9% by volume and 1.2% in value in the UK off-trade. This is below grocery as a whole, which posted a 6% rise in volume and value, but the news was still welcomed.

"Discounting on drinks over Christmas has become part of the psyche for both shoppers and retailers these days but nevertheless this is a good result," said Dan Jago, head of BWS at Tesco.
