A vintage potato variety has been plucked from the brink of extinction by Waitrose and supplier Solanum.
Shetland Black, originally grown before 1920, is now back on the shelves at Waitrose. Solanum is growing around 35 tonnes of the variety on 1.66ha near St Andrews in Scotland.
Solanum commercial manager Laura Brown-Waite said: "By taking a percentage seed from each yearly crop over the past six years we have been able to create more volume of product to supply."
