Operating profits at brewer Adnams more than doubled in the past year to £3.2m, with take-home beer sales up 22%.

Turnover rose 9% to £51.3m last year, the Suffolk brewer reported, as overall beer volumes rose 4%.

But Adnams warned of an “uncertain year” in 2010, with the cold weather of recent months a setback.

“2008 was a difficult year for Adnams, but some of the investments that we made and the tough decisions we took that year are bearing fruit in an improved performance,” said executive chairman Jonathan Adnams.

“2010 started very unhelpfully with colder weather and more snow than we have seen for some years. This has set us back a little at the start of what looks like a very uncertain year. There will be a general elections and there is a clear expectation of tax increases,” he added.
