Waitrose has reported bumper Easter trading figures after sales of seasonal favourites such as chocolate eggs and hot cross buns soared.

The supermarket said sales for the week ending Easter Saturday were 14.8% up on Easter week last year at £140.7m.

Sales of Easter confectionery rose 29%, helped by strong sales of Waitrose’s new ‘Woodland Friends’ range of chocolate characters.

Hot cross buns also did well, with sales rising 22%, and pre-packed lamb sales shot up 49%.

Online sales were also up 58% on Easter week last year. “Shoppers appreciated the option to shop from the comfort of their own home in the unseasonably chilly weather,” the supermarket said.
