Waitrose has enjoyed a bumper start to 2013 with a 20.6% jump in sales for the week ending 5 January.

Some of the highlights include a 51% increase in sales of beer, wines and spirits and a 157% increase in Waitrose Entertaining food orders.

The figures cap off a successful festive trading period for Waitrose. It reported a 7.7% increase in sales for the period 4 November to 24 December and an 8.8% rise in sales for the two weeks to 31 December.

However, Kantar data released this week indicated that Waitrose’s sales growth slowed in December.

It said the upmarket supermarket’s sales rose 5.4% for the 12 weeks to 23 December but that sales growth fell to 2.5% during the final 4 weeks before Christmas.
