Waitrose has set the pace for the major supermarkets’ Christmas trading, notching up a 9% increase in like-for-like sales for the 13 weeks to 26 December.

The supermarket also revealed a 16.1% increase in total sales during the period.

Meanwhile, sales were up 20.5% to £134.6m in the week to 26 December, which Waitrose claimed was “record-breaking”.

Waitrose is the first of the big supermarkets to release its Christmas trading figures. Updates from Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer are expected later this week.
