Waitrose has reported that half-year turnover exceeded £3bn for the first time.
The upmarket supermarket said today sales rose 11% over the past six months, excluding fuel.
“We have been achieving sales growth that has been significantly and consistently ahead of the market - indeed, we have now outperformed the market for over four years in a row, according to Kantar data,” said Waitrose MD Mark Price.
He said at the opening of a new store in Greenwich in June that Waitrose’s sales growth figures had accelerated in recent months. He added that concern about GM crops and greater demand for higher quality produce in the wake of the horsemeat scandal had benefited the retailer.
Waitrose’s Brand Price Match, which promises to peg Waitrose prices on brands against Tesco – excluding promotions – has also helped improve value perception.
Full details of the results will be published in interims that come out in September.
In the past week, Waitrose sales growth slowed to 4.1%, but was up against tough comparatives – the equivalent week last year was one of the first hot weeks of the summer and coincided with the Olympics. Waitrose said sales of Heston’s salted caramel popcorn ice rocketed 2,460% - boosted by a TV ad and press campaign.
