Bosses have warned that wafer-thin margins are threatening the sustainability of English apples.
Robin Pooley, chairman of trade body English Apples and Pears, claimed this week that England’s apple industry had slimmed down to a point where just“20 major investors represent 80% of the national crop”.
Pooley, speaking as EA&P launched its English apple promotional programme, added: “If this attrition continues, there is a danger that it will fall below the critical mass necessary to remain competitive. ”
This year’s English apple campaign is the biggest for a decade, with growers voluntarily contributing £150,000.
