The cultivation of biofuels could have major consequences for food and farming and override any benefits if land use escalates, claims a new report.

Independent scientific academy the Royal Society has warned any major switch to biofuels from food crops could leave farmers facing a difficult choice, while switching already cultivated land to biofuel could create shortages of crops.

"Industry needs clear policy signals that provide a long-term framework for development," said the report. "There is a lack of policy integration between the government departments involved, directly or indirectly, with biofuels in the UK."
