Danish pork producers said this week they might be forced to publicise areas where British pig farming welfare standards fall short of those in Denmark.
Speaking after the British Pig Executive launched a controversial ad campaign questioning farm welfare standards abroad (The Grocer, November 20, p62), Danish Bacon and Meat Council marketing director John Howard said: “We don’t believe that the detail of welfare should be debated in a public forum. But if anybody makes any inference of low standards in Denmark, it is only reasonable that we will defend our record.
“The risk is that they will create a situation where the pigmeat industry washes its dirty linen in public.
“I very much doubt we would produce our own ad campaign, because all our mainstream advertising has been about the Danish brand and we won’t be deflected from that.”
