Clement weather conditions have helped Jersey Royal new potato growers get well ahead of planting schedules.
Some indoor-grown potatoes will be harvested in about a week’s time, mainly for the wholesale trade. Good volumes of the indoor crop will be available to multiple retailers in four to five weeks’ time.
The main outdoor crop will come on stream in early to mid-April, weather permitting.
Producers expect an overall crop of 38,000 tonnes, similar to that of 2005, but they hope to avoid the late frost that severely delayed the early outdoor crop, which meant growers missed a premium sales period.
