Sir, As the first major supermarket to switch to 100%-Fairtrade bananas and the world's largest Fairtrade retailer, Sainsbury's unwavering commitment to buying Fairtrade is well documented.

This commitment is not for the short term and despite the damage and loss of production caused by Hurricane Tomas in the Windward Islands ('Hurricane-hit growers in call for supermarket help', The Grocer, 4 December, p30), we are committed to sourcing Fairtrade bananas from the Windward Islands Farmers Association.

Sainsbury's recognises that the current situation is extremely tough for the smallholder growers in the Windwards. Our commitment is to resume supply as soon as fruit becomes available. In the meantime we hope our continued commitment will help them with the rebuilding of their businesses.
