Tomato producers in the Canary Islands say the export campaign is on track despite a smaller planted area.

Ideal weather - warm days with cool nights - boosted production towards the end of the year and 13.2 million boxes had been exported to Southampton and Rotterdam by January. Quality was excellent according to growers association Fedex-Asaja.

Plantings are down 25% as growers scale back production but fruit volumes are expected to pick up because of good conditions.
