Sales are continuing to fall at WH Smith.

In a trading update this morning, the high street retailer said total sales in the 10 weeks to 10 November were down 3%, or by 4% on a like-for-like basis.

Like-for-like sales in its travel stores were down 4%, although total sales were flat. In its high street stores, both total and like-for-like sales fell 5%.

However, WH Smith said that gross margins had “increased in line with our plan and costs continue to be managed tightly”.

“While the current climate continues to be challenging, we remain a resilient business and are well-positioned for continued profitable growth,” it added.
