Sir; Providing schoolchildren with free fruit is an initiative which can only be applauded, and I'm sure this view will be echoed by parents and health institutions throughout the country. I am, however, surprised the scheme is limited to fresh fruit, when pure juice contains exactly the same health benefits as fresh fruit, but in much more convenient format and with a shelf life of up to 12 months. Del Monte is a keen ambassador of the World Health Organisation's 5-A-Day message with our pure juice packs carrying the 5-A-Day logo, which shows that a 250ml serving contains one of the five daily recommended portions of fruit. Del Monte pure juice also has a proven track record of child acceptance in schools, a fact highlighted recently by the success of our Fun Fruit Trail a national competition designed to promote the importance of fruit in maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. Over 950 schools took part in the competition which was produced in association with educational publisher Rapport, with prizes for food technology equipment being awarded for the most original use of fruit in menus created by school children.
