The UK's imported wine market was buoyant last year, with sales jumping 6.4% to nearly £4.6bn.

Wines from Italy, Chile and New Zealand grew impressively with Italians increasing their share of the British market with a 12.4% rise in sales [Nielsen MAT to w/e 29 December 2007].

Chile reaped the benefits of confident promotional trading with sales up 23.3%, while New Zealand rose 27.7%. Australia grew its British wine sales by 5.6%, while France and the US were up 2.1% and 5.8% respectively. Germany was the sole country in decline, down 8.5% .
