The London International Wine Fair and its counterpart spirits exhibition Distil last week attracted their second-highest audience ever.

Although the visitor numbers were down by 7% from last year’s attendance at just under 14,000, the event was described as “excellent” by its organisers.

Wednesday was the busiest day at the three-day show — which has been running for 29 years — when just short of 7,500 people passed through the doors.

“Despite the best efforts of the UK recession, global economic collapse and the threat of swine flu, we’ve seen excellent results at this year’s show,” said James Murray, the fair’s event director.

“Distil, which welcomed 6,190 visitors over the three days, has strengthened its position as the dedicated spirits event to the trade and exhibitors throughout both events have been really positive about the future.”
