Heinz workers staged a 24-hour walkout in protest over pay this week.

Nearly 1,200 workers stopped production at Heinz's flagship Kitt Green plant near Wigan on Wednesday after the company refused to budge on its below-inflation headline pay rise of 3.3% this year. Heinz said the offer, which included a £200 lump sum, equated to 4% in real terms and it was "disappointed" industrial action had been taken.

Further strikes are yet to be confirmed but union Unite warned two million fewer cans of beans and soups would be produced each day of the stoppages.
