Brussels rules on parmesan origin

Brussels: The European High Court has ruled that cheese marketed as parmesan must come from Italy. Cheesemakers in Parma and the surrounding region of Northern Italy have been fighting to protect their product from copies following claims from Germany that parmesan was a generic term for a type of hard, crumbly cheese. However, the court ruled "only cheeses bearing the protected designation of origin 'Parmigiano Reggiano' can be sold under the name parmesan.
