Great Atlantic focuses on north east
Montvale, New Jersey: Supermarket group The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company has reported a first-quarter net loss of $43m (£20.8m) compared with a loss of $6m (£3m) last year. Sales for the 16 weeks to 16 June remained flat at $2bn (£1bn). Losses widened as the company continued to divest loss-making non-core businesses in the mid-west and south of the country to focus on its core operations in the north east. In March this year the group acquired north east retailer Pathmark Stores for $1.3bn.
