Lidl lifts rice rationing in Portugal

CASCAIS, PORTUGAL: Lidl in Portugal has reversed its decision to ration the sale of rice to 10kg per customer, following confirmation it is continuing to ration rice in the UK. Portuguese customers had been limited to 10kg of rice since October, but the limit has now been lifted because the market "is amply supplied with rice and there is no need for rationing". Reports claim Lidl had said the rationing was justified by a "shortage of this basic necessity". Cereal shortages worldwide have been caused by poor harvests and the diversion of crops into biofuels. Earlier this year Wal-Mart-owned wholesaler Sam's Club rationed rice.
