The World Society for the Protection of Animals has called on farming minister Jim Paice to introduce safeguards against the spread of mega dairy herds.

The WSPA held a meeting with Paice this week during which it urged Defra to introduce labelling for milk that comes from zero-grazing production models.

The organisation also requested a strengthening of Defra's code on cattle welfare to require cows to have access to pasture during the grass growing season and asked Paice to ensure there is no drift towards intensive factory milk production.
