Wyke Farms has set its sights on becoming the top UK cheese brand within five years, after winning £5m of funding to boost its expansion plans. Sales reached £12.5m in the three months to 10 August, according to Wyke MD Richard Clothier, putting it narrowly behind Pilgrims Choice in third place (£13m) and Seriously Strong in second (£17m).

Wyke had ambitions to overtake its closest rivals to take second spot within the next two years, after winning the Bank of Scotland’s Corporate Entrepreneur Challenge, said Clothier. It would then set its sights on overtaking Cathedral City to be number one within three more years.

Wyke won the South West England and South Wales regional final, and will now compete for the title of National Entrepreneur in December. The funds will be spent on high-speed packaging machinery, maturing more Cheddar and an expanded marketing campaign.
