More than a third of young people do not know how to make a jacket or roast potato, according to research. A Potato Council survey revealed that only 65% of 19 to 25-year-olds and 67% of 26 to 30-year-olds knew how to cook roast potatoes, with a similar figure for jacket potatoes.

Fewer than 20% of school leavers knew how to make a potato gratin or fishcakes, and the overwhelming majority were baffled by dishes such as leek and potato soup. The Potato Council is aiming to get more people to cook using potatoes as a means of making affordable and tasty meals.
