Beer importer Pierhead Purchasing is adding a new Chinese beer to its range.

Zhujiang - pronounced joo-jung - is brewed in the world's biggest brewery, in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, which produces 48,000 bottles of Zhujiang every hour.

"There has been a huge surge in interest in Chinese beer from the industry and consumers," said Pierhead director of imported beers Michael Cook.

"It is a market which is sure to gain even more attention this year when Beijing hosts the Olympics and is a great platform for us to challenge people's perception of Chinese beer."

The brand announced earlier this year that it would be sponsoring the Chinese basketball team, a move Pierhead is hoping will raise international awareness of the brand.

Zhujiang is brewed with Czech hops, Chinese rice and Canadian barley, and is said to have a crisp taste with subtle malt flavours and delicate hop balance.
