Beef exports have been branded a success by the MLC one year on from the resumption of trade.

Volumes have now reached 66,000 tonnes in total, according to figures to be released shortly.

The resumption of exports has led to tighter supplies domestically, which has played a part in pushing up prices at home, the MLC said. Farmgate cow beef prices have risen 15% since last May and prime beef prices have risen 7%.

Seventy-five per cent of exports have been cow beef for manufacturing but processors want more prime beef exported.
