Supplier rationalisation means Tesco’s largest source of potatoes, Branston, will buy another 40,000 tonnes next year, taking its total to more than 180,000 tonnes.
“The additional tonnage we need is a big opportunity for growers in Kent, Sussex and Hampshire, where we intend to expand our producer base,” said Branston commercial director Richard Clark.
Hugh Donovan, responsible for planning and procurement, said poor weather had led to localised weather damage but there was still a good crop. Close attention would need to be paid to maintaining quality, he added.
