Of the top five brands in the grocery category chart for the week ending

23 October, two were cereal brands - Kellogg's and Weetabix - with the third, Heinz, also having cereals on promotion.

Activity across these three brands for cereals has been fairly consistent, with both Heinz and Kellogg's being in the top five grocery chart for the previous four weeks and Weetabix being in the top five the previous three.

Kellogg's cereals were on featured space promotions within Asda, Sainsbury's, Somerfield and Tesco stores for the week. Sainsbury's and Asda used the x for y mechanic (2 for £3) on Coco-Pops, Cornflakes, Bran Flakes, Choco Wheat and Nutrigrain bars. Somerfield used the save mechanic on the Kellogg's range and Tesco had buy-one-get-one-free on Rice Crispies and Ricicles.

Asda used Ladder Racks for all its Kellogg's cereal promotions, with the other retailers primarily using gondola end featured space.

Weetabix had offers in four of the five retailers, with only Tesco not having any featured space promotions allocated to this brand. Weetabix Weetos 375g and 500g was the product most heavily promoted with offers in each of the four retailers. Asda favoured the save mechanic, Morrisons buy-one-get-one-free, Sainsbury's had 'buy 2 save £1.50' and Somerfield had focused the promotion on the '33% extra free' packs.

Weetabix Oatibix was also still on promotion in Sainsbury's and Somerfield stores, both using the save mechanic with the price of £2.09 reduced to £1.04.

Nestle's activity was slightly reduced, with promotions in Asda, Morrisons and Somerfield stores only. Asda had Nestlé Shredded Wheat 36-pack on offer using the save mechanic, Morrisons had Nestlé Nesquik Cereal 565g with 50% free and Somerfield had Nestlé Shreddies 500g pack with 100% extra free.

Confectionery moved from sixth place the week before into fourth overall in the branded activity chart, probably still related to Hallowe'en.
