PayPoint has recruited Mike Igoe, brand development manager at Sainsbury-owned Jacksons Stores, to woo retailers dissatisfied with the margins it offers on services.
He will manage the utility payment network’s relationships with retailers, its field service support and the development of its retail proposition, joining PayPoint on August 1.
The development has surprised many independents but David Rae, chief executive of the ACS, said he hoped the appointment would create better relationships.
Rae said: “Mike is a well-respected retailer whom PayPoint obviously hopes will bring a retailer’s perspective to the business.”
Dominic Taylor, chief executive of PayPoint, added: “Mike’s valuable experience will help us understand retailers better, forge closer relationships and develop an even more attractive retail proposition.”
Igoe’s appointment comes at a crucial time for PayPoint.
The Grocer revealed last week how one of the service’s star retailers was considering ripping out his terminal (May 7, p4) after becoming disillusioned with the service’s margins.
Igoe joined Jacksons as a store manager in 1976.
His other posts have included store director, marketing manager and business development manager.
When questioned about why he had made the move, Igoe said: “It’s just a great role. I have worked alongside PayPoint since its inception and it’s a great company.”
