Chinese food wholesaler Wing Yip is preparing an ambitious expansion plan targeting a number of small cities throughout the UK and a new cash and carry depot in Cardiff.
Wing Yip, a member of Nisa-Today’s, currently has four depots in Birmingham, Manchester, Croydon and Cricklewood in north London.
It is set to unveil a £15m redevelopment of its Cricklewood site in the autumn and has just bought a site in Cardiff which it plans to open within 18 months to two years.
Chairman Wing Yip explained that the company was focused on these two projects for the time being but after that it would look to open a new depot every two to three years.
Yip said: “Between 85% and 95% of our sales are through foodservice so any city with around one million people will have enough restaurants to sustain our business.”
Yip added that the expansion plan was manageable for the business and said that it did not want to over-extend its resources by trying to grow too quickly.
He also confirmed that he was committed to continuing to run the wholesaler as a family business.
