Sales of local food have risen 30% in its stores in the past year, says Tesco.

"There are hundreds of examples of local produce doing brilliantly well," said Tesco legal and corporate affairs director Lucy Neville-Rolfe. "Customers want to support local businesses."

"Last summer we sold 5,400 packs of local watercress every week in Hampshire stores - almost twice the national sales figure. Our aim is to ensure locally-sourced produce becomes part of our mainstream offer."

Tesco's local products now include Cornish brie and Northumbrian black-faced lamb.
