Cash and carry chain Makro is looking for a new MD following the surprise resignation of John Heenan.

Peter Linzbach, manager for parent Metro’s C&Cs in Central and Northern Europe, will assume the reins until a successor is appointed.

A spokesman for Metro said Heenan had left for personal reasons, and “to pursue other interests”.

Linzbach, who is based in Dusseldorf, Germany, was already in overall charge of Metro C&Cs in Great Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria. He will spend more time in the UK in the intermediate period as Makro seeks a new md.

Makro’s parent Metro Group claims to be the third largest trading and retailing group in Europe and the fifth largest in the world, with group sales last year of more than €51bn, and more than 235,000 staff in 28 countries.

Makro is currently undergoing an expansion drive, and opened stores in Ipswich and Chester in September.
