Marks and Spencer has won the RSPCA's good business award for animal welfare, stealing the crown from ­Waitrose.

Judges praised the fact the store's welfare policies covered all tiers of meat, led by its 'look behind the label' ­initiative. They also lavished praise on the store's communication with farmers and suppliers.

Small food retailer ­Samphire also scooped a welfare award.
