Tesco has reported first quarter figures rose 4.7 % in like-for-like sales - excluding fuel rose- in the 13 weeks to May 26, marking a slowdown from the previous quarter.

The company said first-quarter sales increased after expanding its range of organic foods and cutting prices.

“The UK has made solid progress in the first quarter, with good growth in our core food categories,'' said chief executive Terry Leahy in the statement.

Tesco's international sales rose 24.6 % at constant exchange rates.
