Tesco's fromage frais (two stars) was a touch bland to the taste. It had also separated slightly in the pot, costing it a further point.

In comparison, Morrisons' product (three stars) had a good flavour with a bit of a tangy kick, but its uncanny visual resemblance to low-fat mayonnaise was rather offputting. Sainsbury's offering (three stars) had a pleasantly delicate flavour, but was too runny and the occasional rogue dairy blob was slightly troubling.

There was little to choose between Waitrose's (four stars) and Asda's (five stars) both boasted a smooth flavour and perfect consistency. But with Waitrose the most expensive by far, Asda emerged as a clear winner for value.
