Sainsbury provided two of the three full baskets on The Grocer 33 survey this week, including the cheapest at £39.53.

Safeway in Redruth checked in the third full basket at £45 and picked up the chain’s first Storewatch title since our list was revised to pip Sainsbury for excellent customer service and store performance.

Sainsbury in Bury St Edmunds had a number of offers running on Grocer 33 items and was “an easy shop”. The chain’s Forestside store in Northern Ireland added to the region’s first full basket three weeks ago by checking in another full list for £41.12. Our shopper said all the items were easy to find, but that the only own label bacon available was locally sourced at £2.79. Staff training at the till provided some “light relief”.

Very helpful staff at Safeway in Redruth plus excellent merchandising made the trip “a breeze”. In contrast the chain’s store in Hale was clean but “tired” and stocked Kingsmill bread, but not Hovis. Aisle congestion at Somerfield was due to staff moving in Christmas lines.

The absence of Kit Kat in 8-packs scuppered Asda’s full basket at its newly extended store.

Tesco’s promotion on large packs of McCain Home Fries led to our 1.5kg bag being out of stock. Staff had to hunt down the Corn Flakes for our shopper because they were hidden behind a pillar.

The Co-op had the best deal on Tropicana at £1.04, but was “untidy”.
