Alam worked for design agency Walker Pinfold Associates before going travelling in 1997. On his return he joined Asda as a healthcare and pharmacy trading assistant. He became a trainee buyer in sport nutrition then a paper and laundry buyer before entering petcare in February.

Manners took over her present role at Waitrose in June, following three years at Woolworths, where she was proposition strategy manager for home and clothing for Big W. She began her buying career at Homebase in 1996 as a graduate trainee buyer for electrical accessories.

Dardis began his career in 1989, joining Safeway in 1992. He was given the unique role of lead space planner before moving into buying five years later. Responsibilities have included fresh pizza, fruit juices, crisps, snacks and biscuits and petfood. He has just been promoted to his current role.

Mooney took up his present role in April following a stint as senior buyer, baby foods, accessories, nursery and children’s clothing. He joined Sainsbury from Safeway, where he was senior buyer, chilled pizza, pasta and sauces. He began his career in 1997 on Safeway’s trading and marketing scheme.

Maltby joined Tesco on a graduate scheme three years ago and says working in stores was a valuable experience. He was petcare buyer for two years, developing a range that delivered more than 20% value growth, increasing Tesco’s market share by more than 3%. He is now a morning goods buyer.

Whitaker left school after A levels, joining Morrisons as a buyer’s assistant. She moved to Asda, progressing to assistant buyer, before joining Netto as non-food buyer and rising to trading controller. After eight years she rejoined Morrisons and was promoted to senior buyer this August.
