Located at the end of Manchester's tram network, Morrisons' Eccles branch won our Top Store award last year for the way it coped so well with crowds of commuters.

Store manager Ian Thorpe (left) said a departing tram could prompt 500 people to suddenly enter his store, causing availability issues.

Thorpe has since left to open Morrisons' new Whitefield branch, also in Manchester, but assistant deputy manager Vince Stringer said commuters were still driving sales growth across the store.

He added that he felt having Richard Hammond as the face of Morrisons on TV was a good choice.

"Unlike some of the celebrities we've used, Hammond will appeal to younger consumers," he said.
