Sainsbury's in Ripon, North Yorkshire, won The Grocer 33 Top Store Award this time last year, when duty manager Diane Hayes received the award on behalf of store manager Nick Alcock.

Alcock retired to be replaced by Malcom Mitchell, who was out when we called and Hayes was filling in. She noted that the store has gone from strength to strength since it won the award last year. "She said: "We are now serving 24,000 customers a week and our turnover is up 15% on plan so far, which is a fantastic achievement."

If the Ripon store continues to perform like that, Hayes may not have to wait much longer to achieve the goal she told us about last year: becoming a store manager herself.
