Despite export difficulties, the first arrivals of Jaffa grapefruit are hitting the UK during what is described as an extremely short market with South African fruit finishing early

Mehadrin Tnuport Export is marketing the Jaffa-branded White and Sunrise grapefruit.

Demand for early fruit has outstripped expectations, but exports from Israel were being hampered by port strikes and New Year festivals.

MD Dov Warmen said: “The fruit this year is of particularly
good eating quality with lower than normal levels of acidity for this time in the season. However, the fruit is slightly smaller, and we will have lower volumes of larger sized fruit.”

Forecasts from MTEX indicate white grapefruit similar to last season at 30,000 tonnes while red production is expected to be 20% lower at 40,000.
