Tropical fruit growers have delivered a petition to the European Commission, calling on it to curb the buying power of supermarkets.

On Wednesday, Latin American trade union representative Iris Munguia and Caribbean farmer representative Renwick Rose presented the petition to the EC in Brussels. They also addressed the Fair Play: retailers and the Food Supply Chain informal MEP working group.

The petition, which is part of the Make Fruit Fair campaign of not-for-profit body banana Link, calls for overseas and indirect suppliers to be included in a new supermarket code of practice, which is currently being developed by the European Commission.
